Spring Sky Watch
Can you tell the difference between a star and a planet? The Crew Astronomy Club teaches you how. Use telescopes to search the sky for constellations, Venus and Saturn. Take a close-up look at the moon. Bring binoculars and dress for the spring weather. An indoor program is held if the weather doesn't cooperate. You may call the park to schedule a Sky Watch program just for your group.

6: The annual Relay for Life is held on the first Friday night in June to raise money for the American Cancer Society. This event starts at 7 p.m. and continues through the night at Powhatan Elementary School. If rain is in the forecast, the Relay is held at Powhatan High School. 804-598-3074

21: Dear friends and volunteers of Sailor's Creek Battlefield: The staff here would like to cordially invite you to our Friends Group and Volunteer Appreciation Cookout at Sailor's Creek Battlefield State Park. We would like to show our appreciation to those volunteers who have helped us out in the past and recruit members for our new Friends of Sailor's Creek Battlefield group. The cookout will be held outside the Hillsman House on June 21st 2008 from noon until 3 PM; hamburgers, hotdogs, potato salad, and drinks will be provided.  Please RSVP by June 18th.  If you are a member of a large group, please send an estimation of how many will attend. 21-22: 12th Annual Civil War Weekend at Pamplin Historical Park. The rattle of musketry and the roar of cannon rally visitors to this educational and entertaining commemoration of the Civil War era. Living history demonstrations, lectures and book signings, storytelling, and musical performances engage all your senses and help the Civil War era come to life. 28: Sailor's Creek Battlefield Jr. Rangers - Come earn your Junior Ranger patch at Sailor's Creek Battlefield State Park. On Saturday June 28, 2008 from 1 PM until 4 PM, children ages 7-11 will make Civil War crafts, eat food from the era, and play games. Meet at the picnic area beside the Hillsman House.The fee for the program is $2/person or $6/family. James River Bateaux Festival – Every year beginning on the weekend of Father’s Day in June, people from all over Virginia set out on a week long adventure on the James River. The bateaux were used to transport goods and people along the river from the 1700’s up until the early 1900’s. The journey begins in Lynchburg and ends some 120 miles down the river at Maiden’s Landing in Powhatan. 434-528-3950

4 - 7: Fourth of July Weekend Activities
Visit this weekend for exciting events and programs. Join us around the campfire Friday night for s’mores to learn about the weekend's activities. On Saturday from 3-5 p.m., come to the Nature Center for tie dying, a watermelon seed spitting contest for the kids, volleyball and horseshoes tournaments and more. Take in an outdoor bluegrass concert on Saturday night, and be sure to sign up early for the Sunday night Owls by Wagon ride. Visit "Treasure Island" in a canoe, kayak or tube and learn about the James River. The park's canoe livery rents canoes, kayaks, tubes and bicycles, and offers shuttle services. 19: James River Raft Race and Summer Festival
This event promises fun for the whole family. Activities include a fishing clinic, kids fishing derby, game station, river races, car show and live music. Festivities continue throughout the day. The adventurous two-mile race has a variety of categories - canoe, kayak, inflatable craft, and homemade river vessels. Pre-registration is encouraged. Prizes are awarded for the fishing derby and races. Food and drink are available for sale. Rain date is July 26. There's a nominal registration fee.

21 - 26: ALIVE by the James
Don't miss this hands-on camp for high school students. The camp focuses on the study of the Chesapeake Bay and its watersheds through intensive study of water quality, soils, forestry and a service learning project along the James River. 13: Wildlife Mapping Workshop
Learn how observations in nature help wildlife. Be part of the Department of Game and Inland Fisheries Wildlife Mapping Program. This hands-on workshop covers the skills necessary to capture wildlife observation information in a format useful to the department. Dress for the outdoors and bring a bag lunch. There will be a brief hike following the presentation. The $25 fee covers program materials and supplies. Pre-register to reserve your place. Space is limited.

25: Powhatan’s Festival of the Grape – This annual event occurs on the last Saturday in October. Virginia wineries are invited to the historic Courthouse Square lawn to allow the public to sample the fruits of their labor. Area artisans and food vendors are also invited to sell their wares. 13: The annual Powhatan Christmas tree lighting and parade occurs on the second Saturday of December. Beginning at Powhatan Elementary School, the parade features a procession of floats, fire engines, antique cars, and horses with representation from just about every organization in Powhatan. The parade ends with Santa at the Courthouse Square lawn where all gather around for the lighting of the Christmas tree. 804-598-3806
